Gear! This may very well be the most discussed topic leading up to a hunt, debated over a hunt while hiking or poking the campfire (if you have the luxury of getting one), or debriefed after the hunt. You’ll talk about what you wish you had or what you wish you’d left behind. We may debate which brand is better and why, and what the pro’s and con’s of each are. However, many of you have not hunted the mountains of the west coast of British Columbia. They are steep. But the views from the top are some of the best in the world and we are blessed to hunt here.

The number one question we are asked after a hunt is booked, is what do our professionals use? Below is the most comprehensive list that we can think of, and if it’s not on this list, you don’t need it. Use this list, study it and pack accordingly. Ounces turn into pounds, and pounds just get downright heavy.

Fall goat, late season goat, ocean black bear, lodge or camp black bear, moose, blacktail, fly in trout or coastal fishing.

For a coastal black bear hunt, we will take care of all field preparation of your cape and skull. Cape will have eyes, ears, and lips turned and the hide salted and dried. Skull will be boiled and cleaned. You will need to purchase a drybag in which we can roll the cape and skull together, place in the bag and you can simply travel home with the cape and skull.

Mountain goat and moose hunts require a compulsory inspection (CI). An appointment is necessary to have the inspection completed and there generally is not time after your hunt to get this complete before you travel home (although sometimes it works out). We will generally take care of the field preparation for you, get the CI completed after your departure, and drop the skull and cape at a taxidermist for shipment preparation. You can expect about a $1200-$1400 cost for crating and shipping of your trophy to the taxidermist of your choice.

Typical gratuities are 15-20% of the cost of the hunt, depending on your experience. Please tip your guide and packer (if you have one) after the hunt. You should also tip the camp cook as well if there is one for your particular hunt. They work hard to bring you great meals every day and your tip is very much appreciated. If you feel the staff has not done a great job, please let me know so the issues can be addressed. We strive to provide you the absolute best experience and are always looking for ways to improve.

The majority of our shots are within $175 yards for any species. That being said, on occasion, and more often on the late season goat hunts, we have had shots that are as far as 500 yards. We cannot stress the importance of practice before you come and take shots from realistic field positions, not just from the bench.
